Quando entrò in casa il nostro primo borzoi l’innamoramento fu immediato nonostante la presenza di altri cani e di numerosi animali domestici. Subito cercammo di approfondire la conoscenza della razza e ben presto entrarono a far parte della famiglia altre due femmine diventate poi la base del nostro allevamento. Il profondo legame che ci unisce a tutti gli animali, ma in particolare a cani e cavalli, ha trasformato l'incontro con questa razza affascinante nella decisione di conoscerla il meglio possibile, di allevarla e di diffonderla, visto che in Italia è poco nota e presente con un numero limitato di soggetti. Attualmente il nostro è un piccolo allevamento amatoriale che intende crescere puntando sulla serietà e sulla qualità delle proprie scelte.

When our first Borzoi entered the house, it was love at first sight, despite the joyous presence of other beloved dogs and pets. We immediately started deepening our knowledge of the breed and in time other two Borzoi females arrived, to be part of the family. Our family’s deep liking for all animal life, with a special inclination for dogs and horses, turned the first encounter with this wonderful breed into a firm decision: dedicate time to getting to know Borzois thoroughly, breed them skilfully and make them even better known in Italy, where they are still quite uncommon and in very limited number. This is the reason why we decided to look for well-known, reliable kennels in the choice of our females, so as to start with quality. At the moment, we are striving to improve our small amateur's kennel by pointing on serious qualified choices.

Perché scegliere proprio un borzoi? / Why choose a Borzoi?

Inizialmente questo levriero attira l’attenzione per la sua bellezza ed eleganza ma poi si viene letteralmente conquistati dalle mille sfaccettature spesso contradditorie del suo carattere che unisce languore e dolcezza a forza e veemenza, fedeltà e affettuosità ad autonomia e forza di carattere, timida delicatezza a fulmineità di attacco. Non bisogna dimenticare infatti che i borzoi sono cani da caccia, ma proprio per non smentire la loro natura contradditoria i nostri convivono serenamente con una decina di gatti che distinguono nettamente dai gatti “estranei” ai quali non permettono l’invasione del loro territorio. Naturalmente ogni individuo ha un suo carattere peculiare per cui ci sono i pigri che passerebbero la loro vita languidamente adagiati sui divani, agli scatenati che hanno voglia di giocare e correre tutto il giorno; ma tutti, se messi al guinzaglio o portati in casa, si comportano da veri signori con dignità ed eleganza muovendosi con grande delicatezza. La loro sensibilità e il loro amore totale non vi deluderanno mai se voi farete altrettanto nei loro confronti.

Initially one is attracted by a Borzoi’s beauty and elegance, soon to discover its intriguing multi-faceted, often contradictory temperament, its languid sweetness often matched with strength and vehemence. A Borzoi’s faithful love for the master combines with autonomy and forceful temper; its delicate shyness can quickly shift into an immediate reaction, the heritage of its hunting origins.Yet, to prove its contradictory nature, a Borzoi can actually distinguish the house cats from any stranger feline who is fiercely kept from invading their territory. Our dogs actually share their lives with a handful of cats and have learnt self-control; when they meet cats or chickens in the fields, they nobly pretend not to see and move homewards. Obviously, every dog has its own individual personality, from the lazy lady who would spend all her life lying on the sofa to the unbridled, who plays and runs all day long. But if you put them on the leash or keep them inside, all of them behave like aristocrats, in dignified poses and careful movements. If the master treats them properly, their sensitivity and total dedication will never fail.

Le esposizioni / Shows

Le esposizioni sono importanti per un allevatore perché sono il momento in cui avviene la conferma delle proprie scelte allevatoriali. Pensiamo però che un cane abbia il diritto di vivere una vita adatta alle sue esigenze e che le esposizioni non debbano condizionare né la sua vita né la nostra. Cerchiamo quindi di limitare il numero delle esposizioni durante l’anno e il tempo di permanenza del cane all’interno della struttura espositiva dato che il rumore e la concentrazione di animali e persone è fonte di stress per cani abituati a un tipo di vita il più naturale possibile. In genere chiediamo ai nostri cani di finire il campionato italiano e quello internazionale e di fare non più di due cucciolate; a questo punto possono considerarsi “in pensione” e godersi i prati, le passeggiate, i giochi con le compagne e le coccole dei padroni.

Shows are an important feature for breeders as they represent a moment of recognition of a breeder’s choices in his/her activity. However, we are convinced that dogs have a right to living a type of life fitted to dogs’ needs, hence both dogs and breeders shouldn’t be excessivelyconditioned or stressed by shows. Consequently, we try to limit to a minimum the number of shows per year, and reduce the length of time a dog needs to stay inside the show area, since noise and overpopulation of dogs and humans is a source of stress for dogs accustomed to live within a free and natural type of environment. As a rule, we choose to take dogs to shows until they have completed the Italian championship, and the international one. And the females only breed twice. From that point on, they can happily ‘retire’ and enjoy running in our meadows, go for long walks, play with their favourite companions and take the pleasure of being coddled.

L’allevamento / Breeding

Noi abbiamo solo femmine perché tenere un maschio in allevamento vorrebbe dire farlo vivere in una gabbia per la maggior parte dell’anno dato che con 6-7 femmine ce n’è frequentemente una in calore.
Nel corso della loro vita le nostre femmine fanno una o al massimo due cucciolate; la prima attorno ai 2 1/2 – 3 anni, la seconda non più tardi dei 5 anni. Il nostro obiettivo è di avere cani con una struttura corretta e una bella espressione, sani, atletici e con un carattere dolce e piacevole.

In our kennel, we only keep females; keeping a male would mean compelling him to live in a cage or in a limited space for most of the year, since we have an average of six- seven females, which means that there is almost always one in season. The females mate once or at the most twice in their lifespan; their first litter is planned when they are between 2 1/2 - 3 years old, the second much before they are 5. The objective of our kennel is to aim at healthy dogs with a correct structure, and athletic build; we also look for a beautiful expression and a sweet, pleasant character.

Cà Frosco

Cà Frosco ospita molti altri abitanti a due e a quattro zampe nei cui confronti le nostre borzoi dimostrano un controllato rispetto fino al punto che, se nel loro prato incontrano qualche gallinella che ha sconfinato, si allontanano e si dirigono verso casa per non correre il rischio di cedere alla tentazione di una bella caccia. Per quanto riguarda tutti i nostri animali l’intenzione è di allevare in purezza senza però limitare la libertà di movimento per cui i cani, i piccoli e piumosi polli moroseta, i candidi e tranquilli colombi pavoncelli e la pony Shetland Violetta con la sua puledra Artemisia si muovono liberamente nel prato o nel boschetto di ciliegi e rientrano nei loro ricoveri a loro piacimento o solo col buio della sera. Dopo un primo momento di grande eccitazione anche la piccola Artemisia è stata accettata dalle levriere anche se per sicurezza il prato dei cani è separato da quello degli altri animali da uno steccato e da una rete.

Ca’ Frosco is enlivened by other pets, too. As our prime care is rearing pure breed animals without confinement into cages, we chose to keep few animal breeds, possibly compatible with one other: the small feathery Moroseta chicks, a colony of peaceful white doves, plus two Shetland ponies, Violet and her filly Artemisia, all of them moving around freely in the fields or under the wild cherry trees. After the first excited encounters with the other animals, especially with young Artemisia, our Borzois now accept the presence of all, though kept in separatly fenced fields. Just to be safe…
